Tame Impala‘s Kevin Parker has been threatened with a lawsuit by Samm Culley, a member of the ’70s funk group Skull Snaps. Culley alleges that Parker sampled the band’s “It’s a New Day” on Currents track “Eventually”, and said a musicologist had corroborated the charges. Parker, in turn, posted an e-mail from Cullen containing the charges on his Instagram, along with a short statement denying the allegations.

“WOW unexpected compliment!” he wrote. “The creator of the famous Skull Snaps drum sample thinks my drums IS his actual sample and wants to sue me for not clearing it! Haha!! Sam Culley you have 3 days to fire your musicologist. Anyone think this could be a hoax though?”

However, it has been confirmed that it isn’t a hoax; it was the real Culley that contacted Parker. “It’s a New Day” has been sampled countless times by Common, the Pharcyde, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and others.

Recently, Tame Impala were involved in a lawsuit over missing royalties.
