Ted Leo Announces New Album With Kickstarter Campaign

Ted Leo has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the recording of his next studio album. Leo is looking to raise $85,000 to fund the completion and production of his first non-Both album since since 2010’s Ted Leo and the Pharmacists album The Brutalist Bricks. Perks for the campaign include a career-spanning mixtape of Leo’s demos, a 7” singles series that pairs each of the album tracks with an exclusive B-side, a private solo performance from Leo, and more. The campaign wraps up on March 24, with Leo hoping to release the record in September. Along with the announcement, Leo has shared a five-minute preview of the album, composed of snippets of new songs. Listen below.

“The funding that I’m seeking here will be used frugally and righteously,” Leo said on his Kickstarter page. “I want to keep making music for me; I want to keep making music for you. I’m seeking sustainability, and it’s my belief that I have a responsibility to use my platform to do what I can to help others achieve that, too; and I’m going to remain as active as possible toward that end.”

Leo’s last album with the Pharmacists, The Brutalist Bricks, was released on Matador in 2010. (He writes on Kickstarter that his relationship with Matador “is now over.”) According to the Kickstarter campaign, Jonathan Coulton and Pharmacists drummer Chris Wilson have made contributions to the album thus far. In 2014, Ted Leo released a collaborative record with Aimee Mann, using the monicker the Both.
