The Avalanches Announce New Album Wildflower

The Avalanches have long been at work on the follow up to 2000’s well-loved Since I Left You, and we’ve heard all sorts of rumors about what the album might sound like. Tonight, after debuting their brand new single “Frankie Sinatra,” which features MF DOOM and Danny Brown, they finally announced a new record. Wildflower is out July 8 via Astralwerks/Modular/EMI/XL. In addition to DOOM and Brown, they revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe that the album features Father John Misty, Toro Y Moi, Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux, Camp Lo, Biz Markie, Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue, and Warren Ellis of the Bad Seeds/Dirty Three. (Father John Misty, Herrema, and Brown previously appeared in a teaser video for the album called “Since They Left Us.”) Find the tracklist, a note from the band, the album’s artwork—which they said is inspired by Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On artwork—plus Robbie Chater and Tony Di Basi’s full interview with Lowe below. Watch the wild, trippy new video for “Frankie Sinatra” here.

The album is available for pre-order now. Newbury Comics are selling a double LP with exclusive artwork. The Vinyl Me, Please pressing comes on exclusive red vinyl. Astralwerks have announced that a “Frankie Sinatra” 7″ will be available on June 14.

In the interview, they revealed that Jens Lekman and Connan Mockasin were among the artists who collaborated with the Avalanches but didn’t make the final cut. At one point, Lowe asked how they knew the album was finished. “It was the night before mastering,” Di Basi said. “Robbie had to fly out to master and his flight left at 7:30 in the morning, so we’re in the studio till 6:30 that morning till he literally was like ‘I gotta go man, I gotta get on the plane.’ We were like, ‘I think it sounds good. Fuck it.’”

Since I Left You landed at number 10 in Pitchfork’s “Top 200 Albums of the 2000s” list. Read “10 Times Hell Has Frozen Over Since the Last Avalanches Album” on the Pitch.
