The Avalanches Reveal All About the Samples on New Album Wildflower

The Avalanches‘ new album Wildflower was released last night on Apple Music, ahead of the previously announced July 8 release date. Before the surprise release, Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi spoke to Australia’s Triple J about the samples, stories, and process behind the making of their long-awaited second album. Di Blasi on the Sound of Music sample from “Frankie Sinatra”:

My favourite part about this song is the ‘Favourite Things’ sample, because growing up with five brothers and sisters we used to all watch musicals and The Sound of Music was one of the favourites. We were like little Von Trapp family singers ourselves.

Chater on working with Toro y Moi on “If I Was a Folkstar”:

Our pal Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) was getting married at the time that he recorded this song. It’s in fact about a night when him and his wife-to-be took LSD on a beach and the experiences they had, it’s a beautiful thing.

Di Blasi explaining album closer “Saturday Night Inside Out”:

The last song on the record, which is quite ironic because 16 years ago Robbie gave us all a mixtape of all the new little songs he’d been doing. This was the first song on that tape 16 years ago and it’s the last song on this record. It ties it all up very nicely.

In addition, the interview reveals that Tame Impala‘s Kevin Parker is credited with playing “additional drums” on the song “Going Home.” The song “The Noisy Eater” features a sample of the Beatles‘ iconic hit “Come Together,” the sampling of which was apparently directly approved by Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono. Perhaps the oddest sample discussed in the breakdown is in “Live A Lifetime Love,” which samples American Juggalo, a documentary about Insane Clown Posse.
