The Decemberists Invent Their Own Religion in the "Cavalry Captain" Video

Earlier this year, The Decemberists released What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. Today, they’ve shared a video for “Cavalry Captain” from the album, which recasts the band as proponents of a new-age religion known as Decemberism, with Colin Meloy taking on a L. Ron Hubbard-esque role as the titular Cavalry Captain.

The spiritual benefits from the wacky religion include joy, pleasure, “an end to all those names they call you,” “alienation from the majority of people,” unicorn gifs, and “0001110020111111″. Check out the clip, directed by Daniel Kaufman, below.

A telephone number in the video description (971-23-ALIVE) refers callers to the Institute for the Research and Expansion of Decemberism Worldwide, and instructs them to leave their most ardent wishes; those who leave messages will get a text referring them to the Decemberism website.

The band’s second release of the year, the Florasongs EP, is out today.
