The Internet’s Syd and Matt Martians Announce Solo Albums

The Internet’s Syd and Matt Martians have announced their plans for solo albums in a new interview with The Fader. Syd’s solo debut is currently titled Dive. She has written 14 songs for the record, which she calls “not that deep.” Most of those tracks were co-written with Nick Green. Dive also includes collaborations with the Internet’s Steve Lacy, Hit-Boy, and MeLo-X (who worked on Lemonade). She said, “This is my descent into the depth I want the band to get to,” adding, “For me, this is like an in-between thing–maybe get a song on the radio, maybe make some money, have some new shit to perform.”

Matt Martians said that his solo debut, which does not currently have a title, will be his only solo album. He described the music as “very weird and wonky but it’s very core-heavy and melodic.” He continued, “They don’t sound like Internet songs, [but] they sound like people that are in the Internet.” In addition to his work with the Internet, Martians has released three projects with Pyramid Vritra as the Jet Age of Tomorrow.

The Internet’s other members–Steve Lacy, Jameel Bruner, Patrick Paige II, and Chris Smith–also have solo music in the works.

As far the entire band, they said that they are planning to release their fourth album–the follow-up to 2015’s Grammy-nominated Ego Death–in spring 2017. Writing and recording begins this month, they said. Matt Martians detailed their plan for recording: “We’re gonna get in a room with some instruments and we’re gonna make shit and come up with mad grooves and record ’em.”
