The National Perform New Song "Roman Candle" at Los Angeles Benefit Concert

Last night, the National played a benefit show for Cooperative Education at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. During the show, the band debuted a new song called “Roman Candle”. Watch video of the performance below via Stereogum.

Cooperative Education is a nonprofit that supports education programs for girls in Guatemala. Specifically, last night’s show benefitted the Thousand Girls Initiative, the result of a partnership between the National’s Matt Berninger and his cousins Joe and Jeff Berninger, who founded Cooperative for Education.

“Almost twenty years ago my cousins Joe and Jeff Berninger quit their corporate jobs and started this non-profit,” Matt Berninger said in a statement. “CoEd has already reached more than 150,000 kids with textbooks and computers, and now they’re taking on girls’ education. I’m excited to join the effort to keep 1,000 girls from dropping out of school, which is so common in Guatemala. I’m really proud to be a part of this amazing organization.”
