The Slits Launch Kickstarter to Fund New Documentary

Before she died of cancer in 2010, Ariane Daniela Foster—better known as Ari Up, leader of the seminal punk outfit The Slits—tasked her friend Jennifer Shagawat with putting the band’s story to film. Five years later, Shagawat and director William E. Badgely have launched a Kickstarter page for a new documentary, Here to be Heard: The Story of The Slits, which combines tour footage, photographs, and interviews to chronicle the chameleonic career of the London punk pioneers. They’re looking for funding to complete the final round of editing and licensing. Check out the page here, and watch a trailer below.

Contributors could receive a variety of Slits merch (tees, hoodies, pins), signed DVDs, drumsticks signed by past percussionists Budgie and Palmolive, executive producer credits, and more.

In addition to chats with Slits current and former (the band’s extended family includes members of the Raincoats, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Pop Group, Public Image Ltd, and more), the film contains interviews with the Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook, Vivienne Westwood, Culture Club’s Jeni Cook and Bratmobile’s Allison Wolfe, among others.
