The Stone Roses’ Ian Brown Testifies Against Convicted Sex Offender Fred Talbot

The Stone Roses’ frontman Ian Brown has testified against Fred Talbot, his former schoolteacher and the UK weatherman who was convicted of indecent assault on students and is currently facing more charges. Brown, who had Talbot as a biology teacher at Greater Manchester’s Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, told the court that Talbot tried to abuse one of his friends during a camping trip to Scotland in 1977 or ’78, according to the BBC. Brown said that Talbot took one of his friends away from the group to a pub and attempted to perform a sex act on him. His friend returned to the tent “in a state,” Brown said. He told the court, “Every time I saw him on TV I told people this story. I’ve told hundreds of people the same as I’m telling you here.”

Ian Brown previously testified against Talbot in 2015 when he told a court that his teacher asked the class to go home and masturbate as homework. “Mr. Talbot asked all the class if any us had ever masturbated. We were 11 years old at the time. He went on to explain how to masturbate, how you should masturbate. And the following lesson he asked us who had masturbated and who had come,” Brown said, according to The Guardian. Brown also said that Talbot showed the class a film of a man masturbating. “It was only years later that I realised it was probably a gay porn film. It wasn’t a sex education film,” he said.

Fred Talbot taught at Altrincham from the ’60s until 1984; it was later revealed he was dismissed for propositioning students at his home. He later earned wider recognition as the weatherman for ITV Granada. In 2015, Talbot was sentenced to five years in prison for indecent assaults on two students during school trips. Talbot has now been charged with eight more counts of indecent assault—said to have taken place between 1978 and 1981—as well as one count of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behavior. Six of the incidents allegedly occurred on camping trips to Scotland, as Brown described. Talbot has pled not guilty to the new charges.
