Ty Segall Announces Assterpiece Theatre, a New Art Exhibit

Ty Segall has announced his first-ever art exhibition: It’s called Assterpiece Theatre. It consists entirely of Segall’s paintings. According to a press release, “Reality is on trial throughout Assterpiece Theatre, as Ty finds contradiction in the presentation of everyday people, comic disassociation and ominous suggestion.” The press release continues with a preview/analysis of the exhibition: “And then a black void where the eyes of animals are located. The grouping of dominant mammals displayed in their self-satisfied glory, set alongside typical house creatures might seem to some a suggestion of indictment, but there is instead an recognition of the world as it is here.” Below, see Segall’s Assmountain (a 2016 acrylic painting on a 36×48-inch canvas).

The Assterpiece Theatre opening reception takes place Sunday, March 26 at Chicago’s Soccer Club Club (owned and operated by Drag City, the label that releases many of Segall’s records). Rian Murphy and DJs Hippie Whorehouse will perform. Earlier this year, Segall released a self-titled record. His next release, the Sentimental Goblin EP, is out March 17 via Suicide Squeeze.
