Update 5/12: A representative for West says he will not appear in the film: “Contrary to published reports, Kanye West will not be starring in Chiraq. However, there are discussions for West’s possible involvement in the film’s soundtrack, schedule permitting.”

Spike Lee‘s new film is a musical comedy called Chiraq. It’s about a woman who wants to end gang violence in Chicago; it’s based on the classic Greek tale “Lysistrata”As Screen Daily reports, the film will star Kanye West.

Jennifer Hudson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cusack are also set to star in the film. It’s set to be released online and in theaters via Amazon Original Movies.

It was reported last month that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel took issue with the name of the movie. Lee and Emanuel met to discuss Lee’s plans. “We had an honest, frank conversation,” Emanuel said (via The Huffington Post). “He said that while the movie is about the neighborhood of Englewood, I was clear that I was not happy about the title.”
