Watch Father John Misty Perform “Ballad of the Dying Man” on “Colbert”

Father John Misty has been making the TV rounds all over the world recently. Last night, Josh Tillman stopped by “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” to perform his single “Ballad of the Dying Man” alongside a full choir. Watch it happen below. (Keep eyes peeled around 2:50, when Tillman covers a would-be lyrical flub with impressive grace.) The song appears on his forthcoming album Pure Comedy, which arrives this Friday via Sub Pop/Bella Union. Misty appeared on “Saturday Night Live” in March to perform two other songs, “Pure Comedy” and “Total Entertainment Forever,” and recently delivered a dramatic performance on German TV

Last year, Tillman recorded a terrifying, surrealist, musical dream tableau that he claimed was for Colbert’s bedtime segment (sample lyric: “Your dad [is] shaking his head in the far right field stands/And you realize your penis has become detached…”). It was eventually cut, for some reason. Listen to it here.
