Watch the Minnesota Vikings Pay Tribute to Prince With “Purple Rain” Halftime Show

Last night, the Minnesota Vikings played their first regular season game at their new home, U.S. Bank Stadium. During halftime, they paid tribute to Prince with a rendition of “Purple Rain,” performed by the Minnesota Orchestra and the Steeles. The entire field was lit in purple. See footage of the halftime show below, via Rolling Stone.

During the game, the Vikings’ opponents the Green Bay Packers scored the first touchdown with a pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to wide receiver Jordy Nelson. As fans were quick to point out, it was (sort of) an homage to Prince (even if the Vikings didn’t score): The late icon’s full name was Prince Rogers Nelson.

In 2010, Prince wrote a fight song for the Vikings, “Purple and Gold.” Following his death, the team said, “We will forever be proud and grateful that he considered himself a Vikings fan.” Minnesota’s other pro sports teams, including the Twins and the Wild, have also paid tribute to Prince.
