X-Ray Spex’s Poly Styrene Subject of New Documentary: Watch Trailer

A new documentary on X-Ray Spex frontwoman Poly Styrene is in the works. It’s called Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché and it arrives November 2018. Check out the trailer below. Director Paul Sng has started an IndieGogo campaign for the film, and you can back it now. Some of the perks for backing the project include a lunch with the film’s director, writer, and narrator at Styrene’s favorite restaurant in London. They’re also offering tickets to a private VIP screening. According to the campaign description, the film will depict Styrene’s “struggles with misogyny, racism and mental health issues.” Narrated by her daughter Celeste Bell, I Am a Cliché will also cover the formation of X-Ray Spex. Poly Styrene died of cancer in 2011.

Read Pitchfork’s list “The Story of Feminist Punk in 33 Songs,” and read the Sunday Review of the X-Ray Spex classic Germfree Adolescents.
