YACHT Sex Tape Is a Hoax

Yesterday, YACHT‘s Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans wrote a long Facebook post describing the alleged leak of their own sex tape, blaming “one morally abject person.” They claimed to have “commenced legal proceedings” against that person. A few hours later, Bechtolt and Evans announced that they would legally sell the tape through a newly launched website. The Pitchfork news staff was among the many people who took Bechtolt and Evans at their word. “We have always operated under the principle of doing our best to maintain dignity and a commitment to openness and truth, both on stage and off,” the couple wrote in their Facebook post.

Turns out, it was all a hoax. This afternoon, the “YACHT Sex Tape” appeared on PornHub. Filmed in night vision, it features Bechtolt and Evans cuddling and kissing, before a twist ending.

Jezebel reports that Evans sent an email to Gawker Media on April 6 outlining the plan for the publicity stunt:

For the upcoming music video for our song, “I Wanna Fuck You Til I’m Dead,” we’re faking a sex tape leak.

In the days leading up to the video’s release, we’re going to pretend we were hacked, share and delete confessional social media posts on the subject of our privacy, then try to “get out in front of it” and sell the sex tape, fake a server crash, etc.

Pitchfork has reached out to Bechtolt and Evans, as well as representatives of their label, Downtown Records, for comment.
