Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) South Africa Case Postponed a Second Time

Earlier this year, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) was arrested in South Africa. He was charged with using a false passport and travel document and also for illegally helping his family stay in the country. On March 8, prosecutors asked for a postponement of his case to finish their investigation. The rescheduled hearing took place today, but the result was another delay, as The Times of Johannesburg reports.

This time, Bey’s side requested the postponement. His attorneys asked for more information from the prosecution. One of Bey’s lawyers called the case “complicated but simple at the same time,” given that it involves U.S. and other authorities. The next hearing is set for May 12. In the meantime, Bey is out on bail of 5,000 rands (about $321).

After news came out about his arrest, Bey released a freestyle and message on Kanye West’s website telling his side of the story. Among other things, he announced his retirement from music and said his final album will be released this year.
