Prurient: "Dragonflies to Sew You Up"

By default, something had to be Prurient‘s most accessible work. Dominick Fernow used 2013′s stellar Through the Window as an opportunity to almost completely reframe himself as a dark disco producer rather than a noise artist, all his typical abrasions smoothed into sleek, menacing 10-minute dance tracks. And by default, something in Prurient’s unruly catalog has to be its most comprehensive work. Fernow isn’t taking half-measures on this either. His upcoming Frozen Niagara Falls is a self-conscious monument, two LPs spanning over 90 minutes, the suitable forum to explore All Things Prurient.

“Dragonflies to Sew You Up” provides the five-minute syllabus: Fernow hasn’t foresworn the haunted house melodicism of his recent work, as the underlying synth bed recalls the eerie, flawless tones of “Boys of Summer”. But if you got into Prurient by entering Through the Window, “Dragonflies to Sew You Up” slams it shut and turns on the gas. Fernow’s caustic howl doesn’t just contrast his streamlined production—it conducts an all-out war of attrition, and for five minutes, it’s like seeing a Blackest Ever Black sticker on a Cadillac and wondering how those diametric opposites can exist in the same person.
