Acid House Pioneer DJ Spank-Spank of Phuture Has Died

Earl Smith Jr. (aka DJ Spank-Spank) has died, Fact reports. He was a member of the pioneering Chicago acid house group Phuture, along with DJ Pierre and Herb J. The group posted the news on their Facebook page, expressing their love for him and promising to continue work on his final album. Spank-Spank’s cause of death has not yet been revealed, but he suffered a stroke this past May, which required surgery.

Spank-Spank, Pierre, and Herb formed Phuture in 1985. Spank-Spank was the group’s lead drum programmer and main vocalist. The trio are best known for their 1987 single “Acid Tracks,” which is widely considered one of the first songs to birth the acid house genre. In addition to his work with Phuture, Spank-Spank released a number of solo records, such as 1996’s “Another World.”
