Cool Soundtrack Specialists Mondo and Death Waltz Unite, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Shaun of the Dead, Looper Releases Due

Mondo is the Austin-based gallery that produces awesome-looking limited edition movie posters, VHS reissues, and soundtracks on vinyl (including that Drive reissue). They’ve just acquired Death Waltz Records, who also offer beautifully packaged vinyl-only soundtracks. Read our introduction to Death Waltz.

Death Waltz founder Spencer Hickman will join Mondo as their label manager, working alongside Mondo creative director Justin Ismael. In a statement, Hickman said:

I looked at what we’ve achieved independently and then I started thinking what we can do together. We intend to build a full-service record label offering incredible music in all formats: vinyl, CD & digital. Our goal is to make Mondo the ‘go-to’ label for fans, filmmakers and composers alike. After 25 years in the music industry, I don’t think I have been as excited as I am with this opportunity.

Mondo have also announced some new releases, which will be available at Mondo’s first-ever convention, MondoCon (taking place September 20-21 at the Marchesa Hall & Theater in Austin).

Daniel Mudford and Pete Woodhead’s Shaun of the Dead score will be available for the first time, with artwork by Jock. It comes with liner notes from director Edgar Wright and the composers. A limited pressing of 1,000 will be pressed on “Strawberry Swirl” vinyl. It’s on sale online October 7. At MondoCon, the release will be celebrated with “a carnival-style record-throwing booth where attendees can test their post-apocalyptic zombie defense skills.”

They’re also releasing Alex North’s discarded 2001: A Space Odyssey score, which Stanley Kubrick replaced in the film for classical music. (North didn’t know that his score was replaced until he watched the film’s premiere screening.) The LP was created in collaboration with North’s estate and was packaged with design by Jay Shaw and liner notes by Jon Burlingame. It’ll be on sale online in November in a limited edition pressing of 2001 copies.

Nathan Johnson’s Looper score is also getting released, and it’s coming packaged with a limited edition 7″ featuring “Slinky Dance” from Kid Koala (released in full for the first time) backed by a piano version of the movie theme performed by Johnson. Jay Shaw designed the packaging. It’s an embossed, gold foil gatefold jacket that’s packed in a hand-embellished canvas bag. It’s out online on September 23.
