Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan: “Richard Spencer Is a Cunt”

Last month, outside the Conservative Political Action Conference, white nationalist and “alt-right” leader Richard Spencer jokingly called Depeche Mode “the official band of the alt-right.” The band quickly denounced the remark, calling it “a ridiculous statement,” and adding, “Depeche Mode has no ties to Richard Spencer or the alt-right and does not support the alt-right movement.” In a new interview with Billboard, frontman Dave Gahan has now said, “What’s dangerous about someone like Richard Spencer is, first of all, he’s a cunt—and he’s a very educated cunt, and that’s the scariest kind of all.” He continued, “I think over the years there’s been a number of times when things of ours have been misinterpreted—either our imagery, or something where people are not quite reading between the lines.” He also called “alt-right” figure Milo Yiannopoulos “an attention seeker, a bit crazy obviously,” and “a nut job.”

Gahan has denounced Spencer in a number of recent interviews. Speaking with the New York Post, he said, “I saw the video of him getting punched [during protests at the inauguration of President Trump]; he deserved it.” In an interview with USA Today, Gahan said, “I mean, has he ever listened to ‘Strangelove’ or ‘People Are People’?”

Immediately following his comments in February, Richard Spencer claimed, “I was joking obviously,” adding, “of course DM isn’t connected to me. Are you going to take every joke I crack literally?” He also said he is a “lifelong Depeche Mode fan,” and has, in fact, publicly shared his love for the band multiple times in the past. At one point, he tweeted that they have “already written all the anthems the alt-right needs.”
