Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold Annotates Lyrics to New Song “Third of May / Ōdaigahara”

Yesterday, Fleet Foxes released “Third of May / Ōdaigahara,” the first single from their upcoming album Crack-Up (out June 16 via Nonesuch). In an interview with Pitchfork, Robin Pecknold explained that it is about his friendship with bandmate Skyler Skjelset. Today, Pecknold has offered more details about the track, annotating a number of lyrics on Genius. He writes that the first line (“Light ended the night, but the song remained”) is “Meant to evoke lyrics like Dylan’s ‘There was music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air’ from ‘Tangled Up in Blue’ or Cohen’s ‘there’s music on Clinton Street all through the evening.’ An image of playing music through until morning.” Find all of Pecknold’s annotations here.
