Former Trump Aide Carter Page Cites Maroon 5 in Department of Justice Letter

Earlier this year, it was revealed that former Donald Trump advisor Carter Page was under suspicion of being involved with Russian spies, and was being surveilled by the F.B.I. in the summer of 2016. Now, Page is seeking documents from the Department of Justice about that surveillance, and he’s citing… Maroon 5 lyrics as part of his argument. (Seriously.) “The documents that the US Department of Justice must now provide are crucial to repairing the integrity of your organization following last year’s events,” Page said in a letter to the DOJ, as CNN reports. “A song from popular culture accurately describes many of the matters usurping a vast proportion of your time and America’s attention given the primary focus of the mainstream media today: ‘Like a little girl who cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams.’”

“Harder to Breathe” is taken from Maroon 5’s debut album Songs About Jane, released in 2002. Page reportedly included a footnote in his letter with the URL to the music video for the song. Find that music video below. Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Maroon 5 for comment.
