Giant Lou Reed, Philip Glass Portraits Decorate NYC’s New Second Ave Subway

On New Year’s Day, the MTA opened the brand new Second Avenue subway line in New York City. The 86th Street station features a series of large scale works by Chuck Close, including portraits of Lou Reed and Philip Glass, Brooklyn Vegan reports. See images of the nine-foot-tall mosaic pieces below. The new 86th Street station also includes two Close self-portraits, as well as mosaics depicting artists Zhang Huan, Kara Walker, Alex Katz, Cecily Brown, and Cindy Sherman. 

All three new Second Avenue stations feature new works of art. According to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office, the project is “the largest permanent public art installation in New York State history.” Find more images of the new Second Avenue subway art here.
