Grizzly Bear Explain All Those Teaser Videos: “It Wasn’t Meant to Torture You”

In the lead-up to their new single, “Three Rings,” Grizzly Bear released a number of then-mysterious teaser videos. Those clips featured snippets of new music, as well as psyschedelic visuals (by Eaux Claires creative director Michael Brown). On the band’s Instagram, they were also tagged in different locations, like Philadelphia, Berlin, and Denver. With “Three Rings” released, Grizzly Bear have now explained the motivation behind the rollout. “The idea of the snippets on our new Instagram @grizzlybear was something we thought people would enjoy,” they write. “Our songs are usually so layered and dense and it seemed like a fun way to peel back the onion layers of the new album. So to clarify, it wasn’t meant to torture you but more meant to show you small pieces of all the songs from the forthcoming album!” Read the full note below.

Grizzly Bear’s last album, Shields, was released in 2012. “Three Rings” is set to appear on the forthcoming new LP. “We feel like it’s a good introduction to the album, a good starting point, and we are proud of it,” they write of the track. The new album does not yet have a title or release date.

Hey all. Thanks to everyone for sticking with us as we navigate the wide world of modern social media album rollouts. The promotional journey is just beginning! Weeeee! Here’s a track from our new record. We feel like it’s a good introduction to the album, a good starting point, and we are proud of it. As you may know we’ve been working on this thing for a long time, after a long time away, and we are finally at the finish line. We’ve had a lot of fun making this one and we are excited to get back out into the world again and play some shows and all the rest! More info to come. Don’t know exactly in what order, but it is sure to be a slow and painful drip of minor details, spanning months, culminating in the release of a new record of which you’ve probably already heard half the songs, by which point you may or may not have lost interest and moved on and forgotten what we were doing in the first place. We appreciate your patience and support! We love y’all and thank you again. It truly means the world to us. WELP! <3 Sincerely, Grizzly Bear Ps. Big thanks to the immensely talented Michael Brown @michaelbrowndesign for the analog video synth visuals… trip out!
