Jamie xx Soundtracking Painting at London's National Gallery

Jamie xx’s debut solo album In Colour arrives one month from today. Today, the producer has announced his involvement in Soundscapes: Listening to Paintings, a new exhibit at the National Gallery in London which invites musicians to create sound installations based on works from the museum’s collection. As FACT reports, Jamie chose Théo van Rysselberghe’s painting “Coastal Scene” (pictured above) as his muse for the event, which takes place July 8 – September 6. Visitors will be able to experience painting and music in unison within a soundproofed room.

In a statement to FACT, National Gallery director Dr. Nicholas Penny said, “When sounds have been composed in response to a work of art they can encourage – even compel – concentration. Furthermore, it can combine with an image to captivate and transport us. Silence, afterwards, is not the same.”
