YesterdayJanelle Monáe stopped by “The Today Show” to perform her single “Yoga”, accompanied by Jidenna and her band. Monáe also performed “Tightrope” from her 2010 album The ArchAndroid. She ended her performance proclaiming, “God bless America,” but the rest of her message was cut off on the air, the Huffington Post reports. Footage shows that Monáe continued on with comments about police brutality before the camera cut away and an anchor begins to speak over her. Watch her “Tightrope” performance, as well as the cut-off portion below. Read Monáe’s full quote:

God bless America. God bless all, all the lost lives to police brutality. We want white America to know that we stand tall today. We want black America to know that we stand tall today. We will not be silenced…

Monáe and Jidenna also recently stopped by New York radio station Hot 97‘s “Ebro in the Morning” and addressed the sampling controversy surrounding Jidenna’s “Classic Man”, Spin reports. Iggy Azalea tweeted that the song sampled her own “Fancy” with Charli XCX. Jidenna, however, confirmed that his song does not contain a “Fancy” sample. Amethyst Kelly (Iggy Azalea) and Charlotte Aitchison (Charli XCX) are credited as lyricists on “Classic Man”, but Jidenna said he was just being careful after the “Blurred Lines” ruling from earlier this year.

Monáe added, “She steal from us, we steal back,” commenting on the perception of Azalea as appropriating music herself. She later qualified, “It’s all love. I mean, we all inspire each other. That’s what it’s about.” Watch the full interview below. (The “Classic Man” discussion begins around the nine-minute mark.)

Earlier this week, Monáe, Jidenna, and the Wondaland Records crew released the protest song “Hell You Talmbout”.
