Jay Z Signs Film/TV Deal With the Weinstein Company

Jay Z has signed a first-look deal with the Weinstein Company, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The two-year deal gives the film studio the first chance to produce Jay’s planned TV and film projects. THR reports that there are already projects in development that fall under the new deal.

In a statement, Jay Z said, “I’m excited to tell stories from real-life prophets, whom through their struggles have changed the world for the better, and others whose stories are filled with fantasy and delight.” He continued, “Harvey and David are visionaries both of whom have done this time and time again. I’m already passionate about what we currently have in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to discovering others.”

Jay Z has worked on a number of films. He produced the 2014 Annie remake (starring Jamie Foxx), co-produced Chris Rock’s Top Five, and executive produced Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. In addition, he’s executive produced documentaries about his own work, like 2013’s Made in America (about the festival he curates) and 1998’s Streets Is Watching. He is also reportedly co-producing a forthcoming HBO miniseries about Emmett Till.
