Last summer, it was revealed that Joanna Newsom will act in an upcoming film by Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, Boogie Nights, There Will be Blood), called Inherent Vice. The film is based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon. Now, some more details regarding Newsom’s role have been revealed. According to The New York Times, her character is Sortilège, an “earth-goddess-like” figure who narrates the film.
Inherent Vice tells the story of a troubled detective, played by Joaquin Phoenix, unraveling a conspiracy in 1970s Southern California. The cast also features Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, and Jena Malone, and it debuts October 4 at the New York Film Festival, which begins today and runs through October 12.
