Massive Attack Launch App Containing New Music

Massive Attack recently announced a European tour starting in 2016, along with news of new music on the horizon. Now, they’ve launched an iPhone app called Fantom, which apparently contains new material. You can download the app here, or check out the websiteUpdate 1/21 8:25 a.m.): The app contains four new tracks: “Dead Editors,” “Ritual Spirit,” Voodoo in My Blood,” and “Take It There.” Although they can’t be heard in full, you can hear parts of the tracks by “remixing” them in real-time. According to the songwriting credits, “Voodoo in My Blood” is a Young Fathers collaboration. “Take It There” credits “thaws,” suggesting Tricky – real name Adrian Thaws – is the track’s vocalist. (Massive Attack’s reps haven’t confirmed that.) Tricky last appeared on a Massive Attack album in 1994, on Protection.

According to a press release, Fantom, designed in part by the group’s Robert del Naja, is “a sensory music player that remixes and reforms songs uniquely using a variety of environmental variables including location, movement, time of day, heartbeat and the integral moving image camera.”

In addition to a constantly evolving listening experience, ‘Fantom’ also allows users to create and record unique audio-visual clips which can be shared and saved and easily shared via socials, SMS and peer-to-peer channels.

Massive Attack’s last record was Heligoland in 2010.
