Meryl Streep is the star of Jonathan Demme’s new film Ricki and the Flash, the story of a guitarist/singer who leaves behind her family in pursuit of superstardom, only to return home for an awkward homecoming. As Yahoo! Movies reports, Streep learned to play a number of songs on guitar for the movie, which was written by Diablo Cody and hits theaters August 7: Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs’ “Wooly Bully”, Tom Petty’s “American Girl”, and Bruce Springsteen’s “My Love Will Not Let You Down”, to name a few.
Streep also performs “Cold One”, a track specifically written for the film by Jenny Lewis and frequent collaborator Johnathan Rice. Check out the clip below, in which Ricki performs the song to her ex-husband (portrayed by Kevin Kline) and her daughter (played by Mamie Gummer, Streep’s daughter in real life).
Previously, Lewis and Rice wrote a collection of original songs for Song One, another one of Jonathan Demme‘s films.
