Michael Kandel (Tranquility Bass) Has Died

Michael Kandel, who recorded ambient and trip hop music as Tranquility Bass, has died, 5 Magazine reports. He was 47 years old. A cause of death was not shared.

Kandel grew up in Chicago. In the early 90s, he and Tom Chasteen formed Exist Dance, an electronic music label, and began recording as Tranquility Bass, releasing singles such as “They Came in Peace” and “Cantamilla”. In 1995, Kandel parted ways with Chasteen, but kept the Tranquility Bass name. In 1997, he released the Let the Freak Flag Fly LP on Astralwerks. He also remixed artists such as Steve Reich, Low, Pigface, and the Red Krayola.

5 Magazine points out that a few years ago, Kandel began releasing new music on his Bandcamp.
