Musician Shot in Armed Robbery During SXSW

A local Austin musician was shot during an armed robbery that took place on Friday, March 10. Guitarist Michael Sanders was en route to his home from A Giant Dog’s show at the Hotel Vegas when he was accosted by three masked men, who leapt out from behind bushes near his home and robbed him, the Austin Chronicle reports. Sanders was shot through the shoulder while he attempted to walk towards his house following the robbery—the men took his money and cell phone. According to the Chronicle, Sanders “believes the robbers were preying on people coming home from concerts.” His band Löwin is scheduled to perform three shows in Austin this week; he will be unable to join them due to his injuries.

Last year, a gunman fired into the air in the middle of downtown Austin during SXSW. In 2014, an automobile collision killed four people and injured dozens of others. Read “Revisiting the Car Crash that Shook SXSW, Two Years Later” on the Pitch.

Correction: An earlier version of this story indicated that Löwin were scheduled to perform at official SXSW showcases this week. Their performances are not at official showcases.
