Neil Young Chats and Duets With Stephen Colbert, Beefs With David Crosby on "Howard Stern"

Neil Young has a lot of stuff to promote: a new album, Storytone; a new book, Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life And Cars; a new music player, Pono. Yesterday, he hit up “The Colbert Report”, “Mad Money With Jim Cramer”, and “The Howard Stern Show” to talk about all these subjects and more with characteristic aplomb. You can watch video and audio of those appearances below, via Stereogum

On “The Colbert Report” last night, he let Stephen Colbert rib him about his affinity for environmentalism—check out the “Earth” shirt he’s wearing—and his love for cars. (As you can see from the title, Special Deluxe is about life and cars.) When Colbert asks how many cars Young has owned, he responds, “Many, many, many cars.” Colbert’s response: “I was looking for a more specific number from a guy who wrote a goddamn book about it.” Young also performed “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?”, the first single from Storytone, while accompanied by Colbert on acoustic guitar. Colbert introduced them as “Neil Young and Crazy Host”.

On “Mad Money”, Young talked about the development of Pono and the fight to get it built into cars. On “Howard Stern”, he talked about a number of topics, from his disappointment with President Obama over the spread of fracking (“Barack, hello! Wake up, buddy”) to his longstanding beef with former bandmate David Crosby, whom he wouldn’t even address by name. (“There’s love there. There’s just nothing else there.”)

Storytone is out November 4. Special Deluxe is out now.
