Neil Young Files for Divorce From Pegi Young

Neil Young has filed for divorce from Pegi Young, his wife of 36 years, Rolling Stone reports. A petition for dissolution of marriage was filed on July 29, and a hearing is scheduled for December 12.

Pegi is the inspiration behind Neil’s songs “Such a Woman”, “Once an Angel”, and most notably, “Unknown Legend”. They became friends when she worked as a waitress at a diner near Neil’s ranch (“I used to order just to watch her float across the floor”). They became romantically involved in 1978 and were married that same year. They have two children together.

Neil and Pegi were also musical collaborators, having recorded and toured together multiple times. Inspired by their son Ben, who has cerebral palsy, they co-founded the Bridge School together in 1986. Every year, they host an all-star benefit concert for the school.

Rolling Stone reports that Pegi was scheduled to appear at this year’s Farm Aid, but her name was removed from the lineup.
