Perfume Genius Dissects “Slip Away” on “Song Exploder”: Listen

Perfume Genius was a recent guest on the “Song Exploder” podcast, where he discussed the making of “Slip Away,” from his latest album No Shape. Mike Hadreas, producer Blake Mills, and recording engineer Shawn Everett discuss the song’s evolution, and Hadreas shares an early acoustic demo, as well as isolated tracks from the recording. “I wanted the song to sound American,” Hadreas says. “I wanted that sort of Springsteeny spirit to it.” He also notes that it’s “definitely a love song” and that it’s “joyous and free in a way that [he] had never written before.” Listen to the full episode below.

Perfume Genius recently performed “Slip Away” on “Colbert.” He is currently on a North American tour behind the new album. Read our new Listening Diary feature “Perfume Genius on Crying Along to TLC’s ‘Unpretty’ and Not Singing Like Adele.”
