Ronnie James Dio Hologram Debuts, Will Tour Next Year

Metal icon Ronnie James Dio died in 2010, and yesterday, he performed at Wacken Open Air—a metal festival in Germany. Yes, Dio has his own hologram now. During a performance from Dio Disciples—a band featuring Dio’s bandmates and friends—the hologram performed “We Rock.” It was the first time a live rock band has performed alongside a hologram.

The hologram was created by Eyellusion and was made using a live recording of Dio’s isolated vocal track, plus thousands of photos and videos of the singer, Rolling Stone reports. “I cried the first time I saw it,” Wendy Dio, who oversees her late husband’s legacy, told Rolling Stone. “It was quite, quite scary. Our crew, when they first saw it at rehearsal, they were in tears. It’s absolutely amazing.” Wendy Dio, the band, and Eyellusion are planning to expand the number of songs that the Dio hologram performs and, next year, take the show on a world tour.
