SXSW Showcase to Highlight Artists Targeted by Trump Immigration Ban

Tamizdat is a nonprofit organization geared toward helping musicians facing artist visa issues. The group has partnered with globalFest and BBC-affiliated radio program “PRI’s The World” for a SXSW showcase featuring artists from the seven countries targeted by Donald Trump’s immigration ban. Thus far, ContraBanned: #MusicUnites includes Iranian vocalist Mamak Khadem, Iranian producer Ash Koosha, and Somali duo Faarrow. It is set to take place at the Palm Door on Sixth in Austin on March 17. ContraBanned has started a Kickstarter campaign to to cover costs of flying and housing the participating artists. Organizers are seeking $15,000.

After Trump signed the initial executive order (which is currently temporarily suspended in the court system), numerous artists (including Rihanna, Win Butler, and Bruce Springsteen) reacted against the ban. Grimes and Sia started charity campaigns to aid those affected by the ban.
