The Mountain Goats Will Release New Song If You Donate to John Darnielle's Bowling Team Fundraiser

The National Abortion Access Bowl-a-Thon is a series of national events organizing bowling teams to fundraise for local abortion providers. The Mountain Goats‘ John Darnielle is raising money for Reproductive Justice League, his bowling team. They’re competing to benefit the Carolina Abortion Fund, a volunteer organization that assists low-income individuals who seek abortions, but can’t afford the procedure. Darnielle says that if his team gets to $4,000, he’ll release a new Mountain Goats song called “Wizard Level” for free. “it’s sad and lonesome Mountain Goats, not yelling Mountain Goats,” he wrote on Twitter. Find a series of explanatory tweets below. You can donate here. As of press time, they were more than halfway to their goal. Update (1:13 p.m.): The fundraiser raised more than $4,000. New Mountain Goats alert!

ok I got a birthday deal for you here. here’s screenshot of an idea I was working on I think last summer. pic.twitter.com/2ghdLS7gaq

it’s an acapella song. the idea here was an acapella-with-harmonies album. but practical concerns interfere when you get an idea like that

— The Mountain Goats (@mountain_goats) March 16, 2016

(practical concerns like “how will I adequately thank the 75 people who are stoked for the acapella album?”)

but it’s a nice lyric and a nice melody. it’s sad and lonesome Mountain Goats, not yelling Mountain Goats.

so here’s my offer. get my bowling team to 4k today, my birthday, and I’ll track the song today and give it away for free.

I’ll be doing all the harmonies myself, so it won’t be as good as it would if @djperry1973 would just move to Durham already
