Tidal Says Cash Money Never Filed Lawsuit Over Lil Wayne’s Free Weezy Album

Last year, it was reported that Cash Money was suing Tidal over the release of Lil Wayne‘s Free Weezy Album. But today, Rolling Stone reports that the lawsuit never went through as planned. “No Cash Money lawsuit was ever served and therefore it was dismissed before it was ever started,” a Tidal representative told Rolling Stone. 

This stems from Lil Wayne’s $51 million lawsuit against Cash Money for violating his contract, and withholding the money he’s owed for his still-forthcoming album Tha Carter V. The Free Weezy Album was released exclusively through Jay Z’s streaming service, leading TMZ to initially report that Cash Money was filing a lawsuit claiming exclusive rights to Wayne’s music. TMZ also reported that Tidal defended its actions by claiming that Wayne gave the service permission to stream his music in exchange for partial ownership of the company. Cash Money, meanwhile, maintained that Wayne’s contract contains a clause specifically forbidding the artist from licensing his music to outside parties without their consent.

In January, Wayne and Cash Money owner Birdman appeared to have stopped feuding, but Wayne maintained that he is still suing the label and wants his album released; the reconciliation was “mostly sentimental.”
