Twitter Kills Vine

Twitter Kills Vine

Vine is ending, the company announced today. In the coming months, the six-second video service (owned by Twitter) will “be discontinuing the mobile app.” The company assured users that their videos will continue to be accessible, and the Vine website will stay online. They promised to notify users before any further changes are made to the app or website.

In their note, the Vine and Twitter teams also expressed their gratitude:

Thank you. Thank you. To all the creators out there — thank you for taking a chance on this app back in the day. To the many team members over the years who made this what it was — thank you for your contributions. And of course, thank you to all of those who came to watch and laugh every day.

Vine was founded in 2012, and bought by Twitter in 2013 before its launch. It served as a platform for emerging musicians to showcase their talent. Most notably, Shawn Mendes got his start singing covers on Vine. He has now released two albums on Island Records. Because of its short timespan, Vine has also been a place for particular moments in songs to go viral. Bobby Shmurda, Nicolas Fraser, and others benefited from portions of their songs that fit Vine’s six-second frame. Vine has even spawned subgenres, including Simpsonswave. And, of course, fans used Vine to turn their favorite songs into memes.
