Bill Murray and Phoenix Cover the Beach Boys' "Alone on Christmas Day"

Bill Murray’s Sofia Coppola-directed and star-studded Christmas special A Very Murray Christmas is coming to Netflix today. Phoenix are featured on the program, and they’ve teamed up with Murray for a single, “Alone on Christmas Day”. (The track is available as a 7″ and digitally, with all proceeds going to Unicef.) It turns out the song is actually a cover of a Beach Boys rarity. Listen above.

“Alone on Christmas Day” also features Jason Schwartzman, former “David Letterman” musical director Paul Shaffer, and New York Dolls’ David Johansen (as Buster Poindexter). You can also find the song on Apple Music and Google Play.

As previously reported, Jenny Lewis, George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Miley Cyrus, Chris Rock, Schwartzman, and Maya Rudolph all make appearances on the special.

The track premiered on Zane Lowe’s show on Beats 1 Radio. During an interview with Lowe, the band revealed that they’re currently in the studio, working on new material. They also talked about their first time meeting Murray: He and Dan Aykroyd came backstage at one of their shows. When they were told “the Ghostbusters are here,” Thomas Mars misheard it as “the dustbusters” and thought that a cleaning crew had arrived.
