Here Are the Lyrics to the New Pixies Song Apologizing to Kim Deal

Earlier this month, the Pixies announced the release of their new album Head Carrier, the follow-up to 2014 EP collection Indie Cindy. A week later, frontman Black Francis (aka Frank Black) revealed in an interview that Head Carrier would include a song he wrote as a “thank-you letter” to former bassist Kim Deal. He said the idea came from current bassist Paz Lenchantin, as her condition for singing lead vocals on the track. And, indeed, the lyrics reveal that the song, “All I Think About Now,” lives up to the “thank-you” billing.

The lyrics twice include some variation on the idea of going back and changing things for the better: “If I could go to the beginning, I would be another way / Make it better for today.” They also twice directly thank someone, first questioningly (“Remember when we were happy? / If I’m late can I thank you now?”) and then conclusively (“If you have any doubt, I want to thank you anyhow.”) Throughout is a tone of regret: The title phrase, it turns out, refers to when “we were happy.”

Here are the full “All I Think About Now” lyrics:

I try to think about tomorrow, But I always think about the past, About the things that didn’t last, If I could go to the beginning, Then for sure I would be another way, Make it better for today, If I could go to the beginning, I would be another way, Make it better for today, Remember when we were happy? If I’m late can I thank you now? I’m gonna try anyhow, I remember we were happy, That’s all I think about now, That’s all I think about now, I remember we were happy, That’s all I think about now, If you have any doubt, I want to thank you anyhow

The Pixies have long been known for tensions between Deal and Black Francis. The band’s original run came to an end in 1993, as Deal’s other band, the Breeders, took off. Francis reportedly broke up the group via fax. They reunited in 2004 and toured on and off for years. Then, in June 2013, Deal quit the group again. The band fired her initial replacement, Kim Shattuck of the Muffs, only months later, before handing the bass player role to Lenchantin.

Head Carrier is out September 30 on Pixiesmusic/Play It Again Sam.
