Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock Tells UFO Sighting Story

There’s a single on the new Modest Mouse album Strangers to Ourselves called “The Best Room”. In an interview with Studio 360′s Kurt Andersen, Isaac Brock revealed the song’s inspiration: His was directly affected by a famous UFO sighting. Listen to him tell the story above.

In 1997, Brock was on a plane to Phoenix where he was going to finish mastering The Lonesome Crowded West. He was caught in a holding pattern and eventually ended up in a hotel that was surrounded by police tape. A few days later, he watched a news report on the Phoenix Lights story and realized he was around for one of the most famous UFO sightings in history.

The lyrics of the song aren’t about the actual UFO—it’s more about the hotel, police tape, and so on.

During the band’s set at last year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, a meteor appeared in the sky behind them as they played.
